Paper Cut Wall Sculpture
Peloton Wave
I have always been fascinated with birds that fly in a ‘V’ shape and learned that they do so for the benefit of the entire flock. Using the shape of the formation, the updraft and downdraft coming off of the wings can push the birds behind the leader either up or down. Just like this magnificent synchronization in birds, cyclists have figured out how to create a similar energy-saving formation with the arrangement of a peloton. By riding so closely together, the complex cooperation of all cyclists in the peloton reduces drag significantly. It is amazing that as far as we’ve progressed, inventing the wheel and moving at extraordinary speeds, we still have so much to learn from the animal kingdom.
