This piece started many years ago when I created 5th Avenue A, which was a reflection of my experience in the densely overcrowded city. Since then my fascination with cities and crowds and the individuals that make them up hasn’t faltered. Instead, it has grown and developed. From the first work titled 5th Avenue A to the twenty that have followed the characters have become more refined. They started as generic, cartoon-like figures, but with each rendition, I started to add more details and personalities to these characters based on real-life people that I photographed while traveling. One of my favorite characters here is the woman looking away from us, scratching her head. I have always wondered what she was thinking at that precise moment.
